Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music
Seven museum media experiences combining exhibition storytelling, cinematic film, archival animation, and interactive UI/UX design.
Making music history tangible in the museum.
At the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey, eight galleries bring together rare artifacts, iconic photography, music, and immersive storytelling.
C&G Partners designed the exhibitions and signage within a building by COOKFOX. As part of this larger exhibition, De Los Angeles Studio partnered with MB Media Production Services to design and produce media for seven programs: one scheduled gallery film and six interactive experiences, connecting archival material, musical influences, and personal stories to the spaces and objects around them.
The Commission
Develop seven visitor-facing media programs within the exhibition environment. From an E Street Band gallery film to interactive maps, musical influences, and handwritten lyric notebooks, each program needed to make complex stories approachable while complementing the surrounding artifacts, typography, and architectural setting.

Our Contribution
De Los Angeles Studio contributed art direction, visual design, UI/UX design, animation direction, motion graphics, archival image treatments, and video editing across the six programs. Working with media producer Michael Buday and interactive development partner Mind Over Data, the studio helped translate the exhibition’s interpretive content into films and responsive, visitor-friendly interfaces.
E Street Band
A cinematic film in the gallery, not a touchscreen.
The Film & Its Setting
The E Street Band film introduces the musicians and creative relationships behind Springsteen’s sound. Presented on a large screen in a red display alcove, it plays on a recurring schedule of about 40 minutes. Four listening positions let visitors experience the film alongside instruments, costumes, portraits, and other exhibition material.
Archival photographs, interview footage, animated collage and emphatic typography create a compact film language suited to a public gallery. The installation photography is essential: it shows how the moving image participates in the exhibition rather than functioning as an isolated video.
Creative Approach
The film brings archival and contemporary band imagery into motion through bold, rhythmic typography, animated photographic compositions, and editorial transitions. Individual musician introductions and ensemble portraits build a sense of continuity across generations of the band.
Designed for a large gallery display, the visual language favors immediate recognition and strong contrast, while the surrounding artifacts anchor the moving images in the physical history of the music. The film is a scheduled presentation, not an interactive program.
Circle of Influence
A visual network of musical influences.
The Experience
Circle of Influence explores the artists, genres and musical traditions that shaped Springsteen’s work. Visitors can follow connections between musical sources and discover how different sounds intersect across generations. The experience turns a potentially dense history into a navigable interpretive story.
Art Direction & Design
Layered archival imagery, strong typographic hierarchy and motion-led transitions help visitors understand relationships without losing the character of the source material. Show both the interface and its physical setting to demonstrate visitor-scale readability.
Music America Map
Mapping the many sounds of America.
The Experience
Music America Map invites visitors to explore musical traditions through geography, genre, and artists. Touchscreen stations embedded in a wall of record sleeves make the digital content part of a larger visual environment. Visitors can move from a broad view of the country to individual stories and musical connections.
Art Direction & Design

The design pairs an animated, typographic map introduction with accessible navigation, geographic markers and editorial content panels. The case-study sequence should open with the full record-wall photograph, then move into screen details and selected interaction states.
Words to Music
A closer look at the writing behind the songs.
The Experience
Words to Music gives visitors access to scans of Springsteen’s handwritten notebooks and lyrics. An animated handwriting attract sequence leads to a six-song selection; selecting a song opens manuscript pages alongside explanatory text. Visitors can examine the physical marks, revisions, and evolving language of the songwriting process.
Art Direction & Design
The restrained black-and-white interface gives the archival documents priority. Large, readable manuscript images, simple arrows and zoom controls make close inspection intuitive. Lead with the installation on the handwriting-covered wall, then show the song menu and a full manuscript-detail screen.
New Jersey Map
New Jersey as a map of memory and music.
The Experience
New Jersey Map connects places across the state to Springsteen’s biography, performances, and songs. The portrait-oriented interactive display invites visitors to choose a location and explore related photography and interpretive stories. Its physical placement makes the map legible as part of the exhibition’s circulation.
Introductory Journey
Accessibility Journey
Art Direction & Design
A simplified map, prominent location labels, and image-led detail panels support exploration at a glance. Use a full installation photograph first, followed by a location-selection view and a specific destination detail to show how the experience unfolds.
Coverflow Journey
Anatomy of a Song
Unpacking the history inside “Born in the U.S.A.”
The Experience
Anatomy of a Song combines a cinematic introduction with an interactive examination of “Born in the U.S.A.” Visitors encounter historical context, archival materials, and narrative details that complicate the song’s familiar chorus. The program sits beside related artifacts and exhibition graphics, connecting interpretation on screen to the surrounding collection.
Art Direction & Design
Archival collage, documentary-style transitions, and typographic motion set the tone for the interactive material. Lead with a wide gallery photograph, then show the title state and an archival sequence to distinguish the filmic storytelling from the touchscreen experience.
